Resolution

Shades 1.2 requires Mac OS 10.8 or later. You can download the old version here: http://charcoaldesign.co.uk/resources/shades-1.2b3.zip

Updates

strangely not starting anymore

Specifically, after downloading the update, the control panel displays, "Connecting to Shades," but it never finishes that and the app never starts. Canceling brings the dialog box, "Shades failed to quit," with an offer to force quite by clicking "Continue." Regrettably, it will not revert to the old version. We've lost Shades. It was important to me.

Reverting to the 1.2b3 version worked for me on Mac OSX 10.6.8, thanks.

Worked for me, too. I could not find it on the Web site, but fortunately it was sitting in my Downloads folder from ages ago. When the installer is launched, it asks whether to replace the existing version with the one from the installer. Funny that a beta would work, but not the final version.

I really miss shades forced to use ScreeShade...odd that it works on my iMac 24" but NOT on my late model MacMini....will keep trying

Iterations of uninstall-reinstall falls neatly within a less annoying physicist's proffered definition of insanity. You need take additional steps:

Does deleting Shades preference files allow you to start the most recent version?

FAQ #5

" You can do this by selecting Go > Go to Folder from the Finder menu, then typing ~/Library/Preferences to open the Preferences folder, then deleting the file com.charcoaldesign.Shades.plist. Then relaunch Shades"

Command + Shift + G

change the "f0/" to "f11/" for more contrast and a warmer color cast ;)

Installed Growl? Divert errors as they happen to your mobile via XMPP texting. Shades needs a feature to tune color temperature to XMPP texting PEP mood state (or PubSub). Rough day? Tune display to a kinder warmer color even before sunset is upon you. Not so amped downer mood PEP crank up the blue intensity.
