DigitalColor Meter registers incorrect values

  • Type: Incorrect Functionality
  • Version Tested: 1.0.9r4 (Universal)
  • OS Version Affected: Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Status: Verified

This may be intrinsic to the internal design of the app, but pure white registers in the DigitalColor Meter as an intermediate grey color when the brightness of the display is turned down using Shades. This makes it impossible to correctly pick colors from the display. Basically the result is to multiply any RGB color values by a factor smaller than one according to the brightness slider in Shades. The proper functionality would be to dim the display, but have the DigitalColor Meter continue to register the same color it did before Shades was activated.

Yes, this is a known issue. Shades works by drawing a darkened overlay on top of the screen, as opposed to changing the monitor gamma levels, or backlight intensity. As a result any application that takes pixel colour readings or screenshots will also be affected.

I am intending to add an option to vary monitor gamma instead of using an overlay, which should address this problem.
