Shades has worked great until a recent upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks. I get an error that prevents the application launching:

"An exception of class OutOfBoundsException was not handled. The application must shut down.

Not working on Mavericks ...

Missing Shades on Mavericks too. Itâs the best because it controls gamma rather than an overlay. If a fix isnât forthcoming, perhaps someone can recommend an alternative that also works via gamma.

Spend some money... Make it work with Mavericks!
Other apps are ... very bad!

Shades isn't working for me on Mavericks, either. Beachball of death when I hover over the icon in the taskbar, Shades Preferences just says "Connecting to Shades..." but never connects. Have deleted and re-installed twice, still won't work. It was working fine before the update today (Dec. 10th).

Thank you so much for fixing this!!! WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR DEDICATION!!!

Stuck at "connecting to shades..." The overlay shows up but I can't edit the hot keys because they are greyed out.

maverick 10.9.2 - latest downloaded... failed to quit and is not reaponding. If you wish to force Shades to quit, choose Continue.
Deleted .prefs.. but is not gone fine..

Same problem here. Just installed Mavericks (upgrade from SL), installed Shades (first time install). I had to allow the prefpane in Security settings (because of the default 'only allow from app store and identified developers'), opened the prefpane, clicked 'start shades', had to allow the application in Security settings.

Now it's stuck on 'Connecting to Shades...'. Check for updates is grayed out, same with all hotkey settings.

Console shows the following messages when I click 'start shades':

15-05-14 09:14:50,241 System Events[2262]: .sdef warning for part of complex type 'any | number | boolean | date | list | record | text | data' used in suite 'Property List Suite': 'data' is not a valid type name.
15-05-14 09:14:50,242 System Events[2262]: .sdef warning for type 'text | missing value | any' attribute 'uniqueID' of class 'XML element' in suite 'XML Suite': AppleScript ID references may not work for this property because its type is not NSNumber- or NSString-derived.

After waiting approx 5 minutes two icons appear in my menubar for my two displays, yay! The sliders under those icons seem to work perfectly :) Hot Keys are still grayed out though, the prefpane is still 'connecting'.

When I click 'Stop' when the prefpane is still 'Connecting to Shades...' when the sliders are not present the Prefpane asks me if I want to do a force quit. The application (menu sliders) normally closes when the sliders are present. In that case I still get:

15-05-14 09:38:09,133 System Events[2345]: .sdef warning for part of complex type 'any | number | boolean | date | list | record | text | data' used in suite 'Property List Suite': 'data' is not a valid type name.
15-05-14 09:38:09,134 System Events[2345]: .sdef warning for type 'text | missing value | any' attribute 'uniqueID' of class 'XML element' in suite 'XML Suite': AppleScript ID references may not work for this property because its type is not NSNumber- or NSString-derived.

In the console when Shades is closed.
