Shades Bug Report

does not activate until internet connection is enabled

Description
I turn my dsl off at night. Shades didn't work - I thought my filesystem was corrupted. It ended up that it didn't shade my screen until it could connect to the internet - and I had forgot to turn on my modem. I turned it on and as soon as the internet light went on, shades then dimmed the screen to the correct brightness. I consider this a bug - what if my internet connection was having problems (other than me forgetting to turn the modem on)?
It should darnek the screen first - before waiting to check for updates, or whatever.
